Statins Destroy CoQ10

Coenzyme Q10, also known as ubiquinone, is a critical enzyme found in every cell of our bodies. It serves as a catalyst for several key steps in the production of cellular energy, and in particular, plays an important role in cellular ATP production. As would be expected, CoQ10 is highly concentrated in nerve cells and heart muscle cells, both high energy users.

Every cell in our body has a "power producing" organ called a mitochondria. The mitochondria in each cell produce ATP, a substance used as energy for cellular and body processes. Without CoQ10, the cell mitochondria cannot function and as a result, very little energy is produced. The end result of a deficiency of CoQ10 is a completely debilitating weakness and inability to physically complete even the easiest of tasks.

Statin drugs deplete CoQ10 in the body because they interrupt the metabolic pathway leading to the production of cholesterol and CoQ10. The effects of this interference can result in severe and permanent damage to the body's natural energy systems.

Statins deplete both cellular and blood concentrations of CoQ10, with higher doses depleting this critical substance at higher rates. The results are certainly a threat to good health and in some cases, a threat to one's life.

A severe lack of CoQ10 can result in congestive heart failure as the heart cells lack the energy they need to function. Other side effects of statins include, but are not limited to, severe muscle pain and weakness, muscle cell death leading to kidney damage and failure, problems with body temperature regulation, cognition and memory issues, personality changes, polyneuropathy, a condition in which the nerves in the extremities become inflamed and painful, and in some cases, death. Baycol, a statin introduced in January 1998, caused the death of 60 people worldwide over the two years it was on the market.

Duane Graveline, the author of Lipitor, Thief of Memory, has a forum where people who have been damaged by statin drugs talk about their experience.

Many of these unfortunate people discuss being diagnosed with Mitochondrial Myopathy after taking a statin drug. Mitochondrial Myopathy is a neuromuscular diseases caused by damage to the mitochondria. Nerve cells in the brain and muscles require a great deal of energy, and thus appear to be particularly damaged when mitochondrial damage occurs. The symptoms of Mitochondrial Myopathy include muscle weakness or exercise intolerance, heart failure or rhythm disturbances, dementia, seizures and other health issues. As would be expected, these symptoms are very similar to the side effects of statin interference in the metabolic pathway which produces CoQ10.

Ironically, statin drugs are prescribed to patients to address elevated cholesterol, a condition that is not life threatening, and which is in fact, life supporting. All of the pain and suffering caused by these dangerous drugs is unnecessary and tragic. The FDA has thousands of complaints on file, but has yet to take action to protect the American public.

Supplements That Help Fibromyalgia

Although the causes of pain due to Fibromyalgia have not been discovered -- there are many different natural supplements to treat the symptoms of Fibromyalgia. One need not suffer and endure the symptoms that this chronic condition brings.

Chronic pain in different points in our muscular and skeletal system are the general symptoms of this condition and needs to be quickly alleviated to live a comfortable, productive life. There are many ways to treat the undesirable symptoms of this illness - and the good news is that they are natural, healthy treatments.

Let me describe the different natural supplements that treat the symptoms of Fibromyalgia:

Same or S-adenosylmethionine is a nutritional supplement that, if taken regularly, helps fight depression, liver disease and osteoarthritis. It is increasingly being used for its therapeutic benefits in dietary supplements. In a study tested on 44 people with fibromyalgia, SAMe was shown to cause improvement in pain symptoms, stiffness and moods. What is interesting about SAMe is that we already have it naturally in our bodies. It helps our immune system function properly and maintains cell membranes among other numerous benefits.

Magnesium

One of the many problems of individuals with fibromyalgia is magnesium deficiency. Because magnesium has several bodily uses, not having enough of it is a problem. Some of the problems that may occur are soft bones and poor metabolic functions. Magnesium is the prime mineral that activates approximately 350 different enzymes that help the glycolytic and krebs cycles convert the fat and sugar we take in into ATP (Adenosine Tryphospate). ATP is the main nucleotide that is the mode of transportation of energy within cells for purposes of metabolism. By itself, Magnesium has been proven effective in diminishing muscle complaints.

5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP)

5-HTP is instrumental in mitigating the symptoms of fibromyalgia. A naturally occurring amino acid, it aids in sleep, helps in depression and in suppressing one's appetite. All the discomfort and pain caused by fibromyalgia is treatable by 5-HTP.

Melatonin

Of all the sleep aids available, melatonin is one of the most popular,. Melatonin is naturally moccurring hormone that is secreted by the pineal gland, and has been commonly used as a sleep aid and to balance sleep cycles. It is popularly used as a health supplement to regulate sleep and wake cycles. Our "body clock" regulates our sleep and wake cycle partly be controlling the production of this hormone. Melatonin, when taken at bedtime improves tender point count, eases pain due to fibromyalgia and gives you better sleep.

Malic Acid

Have you ever wondered why you feel so refreshed when you bite into an apple? Malic acid, which is found in all fruits, is the source of this sour, refreshing taste. It is smooth, consistent and mildly sour and is mixed with various food elements to produce a refreshing and pleasant taste experience. It reduces the fatigue and pain caused by fibromyalgia.

Ascorbigen

When you cook cruciferous vegetables (like broccoli, horseradish, cauliflower or cabbage) , Ascorbigen, a common medicinal compound is released. Ascorbigen helps in alleviating pain and reduces physical impairment.

Anatrin

Anatrin is a natural health supplement that contains nutrients that increases energy, reduces pain and inflammation, gives you a better mood and diminishes fatigue. It replaces the important nutrients that you lose because of physical and psychological stress. It contains magnesium, ascorbigen and broccoli powder, rhodiola rosea extract, ginger root extract, 5-HTP, melatonin and malic acid.

With these natural supplements, you are well on your way to managing the troublesome symptoms of Fibromyalgia. Be healthy, free and agile and live life as actively as you desire.

Caffeine Pills

When you consider that pretty much every soft drink on the market has caffeine; that coffee shops can be found in nearly every neighborhood in America, and chocolate is the number one selling candy in the world you might just find yourself asking this question: Who exactly is taking caffeine pills and why are they taking them?

To which you might also want to add these questions: Do they really do any good and is there any real danger in taking them?

First, we'll look at who is taking caffeine pills. The answer, as you might expect, includes college students and shift workers who need to be alert through the night. Most college students could probably get by without the need for energy boosting medication if they would just get their schoolwork done before partying, but, well, priorities are priorities, after all. Seriously, though, many students are carrying heavy class loads along with jobs to help them pay for their education. Those all-night cram sessions and last-minute research papers can be very tiring, so it's probably not surprising they turn to caffeine. Better caffeine than other amphetamines. And those working graveyard shifts and other long hours use pills to keep them going.

So why get caffeine in pill form instead of drinking some coffee or a soda? That's a more difficult question and the answer can vary. When it comes to late shift workers, often they don't have access to beverages except during breaks. For college students working desperately to beat a deadline, even that few minute it takes to make a cup of coffee or go down the hall to the vending machine may be too much of a risk. Far more likely as an explanation for the popularity of caffeine pills is that they are easily accessible, relatively cheap and don't require brewing time or refrigeration. It is also possible that users of caffeine tablets think they work faster and stronger than caffeine diffused in liquid. There is no evidence to support that belief, however.

Do caffeine pills work? Depends on what you mean. One tablet of a typical caffeine pill is generally the equivalent of anywhere from one to four cups of coffee. If four cups of coffee gives you trouble sleeping, then you would probably benefit if you need to stay up and get something done. On the other hand, if four cups of coffee barely affect you, then the pills will probably go in and out of your system hardly even noticed. Yes, they do work. But no more so than their beverage-based equivalent.

Are they bad for you? Yes, but only if you overdo it; just as drinking a pot of coffee or a six pack of 20oz soft drinks could be bad for you. Among the side effects you could possibly experience are nervousness, anxiety, or restlessness; stomach cramps, increased heart rate, or chest pain; headache, or even seizures.

There is one medical problem specific to caffeine pills that aren't normally a problem with caffeine consumption through other means. Caffeine overdose can be fatal, but in order for that to happen by drinking coffee, a person would literally have to drink over 100 cups within a short period of time. While that is technically feasible, it's almost impossible to actually do. On the other hand, swallowing the equivalent amount in pill form is very possible and has, unfortunately, been done.

Caffeine is not a good substitute for sleep, no matter what form it comes in. While using caffeine pills to grant you a few extra hours of alertness is certainly not a major problem, depending on these pills for energy can be. Like any other drug, caffeine's positive effects work best when used in moderation. The temptation with caffeine pills is to pop them at the first sign of tiredness. That route will only lead to an increased need as well as increased dosage.

A Review of the Body's Energy Systems for Fitness and Athletics

I've been talking a lot lately about using the right form of energy system work (cardio) to get in peak condition for your chosen exercise activity. For example, one of the dumbest things I see in sports training is football coaches sending their linemen on 1-3 mile runs, and timing them! As far as their sport conditioning goes, that's pointless to the point of counterproductive. Since I've been harping on it I thought I'd give a quick overview of the body's four energy systems, the fuels used, and give an example.

The Creatine-Phosphate System (C-P System): The Creatine-Phosphate System, sometimes called the Phosphagen System is the body's fastest form of energy. It provides energy for extremely intense, short-term activities like heavy resistance training and sprinting that last around 10 seconds or less.

The C-P system utilizes stored creatine phosphate in the muscle to regenerate ATP (the actual energy of the body). Since only a small amount of creatine phosphate can be stored by the muscle this is a fast but very limited system. The body regenerates creatine phosphate but the process takes time. This is why an athlete can't maintain their top speed for any more than a few seconds.

Fast, heavy lifting, short sprints, and any short stressful activity under 6 seconds or so are the best methods of training the C-P system.

Fast Glycolysis: Glycolysis is the process by which the body breaks down carbohydrate (sugar) for energy. This can be done in the muscle by breaking the carbohydrate down into pyruvate or lactic acid. During the course of this conversion some ATP is regenerated and utilized for energy. Oxygen is not required for lactic acid to be created and so this process is sometimes called anaerobic glycolysis. Since the production of some ATP and lactic acid is a fairly fast process this system is used for short duration activity as well.

Fast glycolysis is utilized during longer strength training sets and high intensity activities lasting longer from 6 seconds to about two minutes. Mid-range sprints and fast strength movements can train this system. Most American football players utilize the C-P system and fast glycolysis to provide the energy they need during play.

Slow Glycolysis: When oxygen is available glycolysis operates a little differently. During slow glycolysis (sometimes called aerobic glycolysis) the end result of the breakdown of carbohydrate is some ATP and pyruvate as opposed to lactic acid. The pyruvate is then passed on to the Krebs Cycle (the body's main power plant) in the cell's mitochondria where it can be further broken down to create more energy. As such slow glycolysis is much more efficient than the C-P system or fast glycolysis in that it nets much more ATP per molecule of sugar used. However, it's a much slower system, trading speed for efficiency.

Slow glycolysis is trained with exercise lasting longer than two minutes but is still fairly intense. Short, fast runs and sets lasting longer than two minutes are the best ways to train slow glycolysis. The development of the fast and slow oxidative system is the most important for most fitness goals. Most athletic activities rely on a combination of the two and they are also among the most effective training protocols for body fat loss.

The Oxidative System: The oxidative system consists of slow glycolysis, covered above, and beta-oxidation. Beta-oxidation is the series of reactions by which free fatty acids are broken down in the presence of oxygen. This results in acetyl CoA and hydrogen atoms. The acetyl CoA is sent directly to the Krebs cycle and the hydrogen is sent to the electron transport chain to squeeze out a few more ATP. This is by far the most efficient energy system in net ATP created, but also the slowest.

Beta-oxidation is the energy system primarily used by the body to create energy while at rest or during very low intensity exercise like long, slow running, cycling, or walking. Most long distance runners have developed a very refined oxidative system.

With a solid understanding of how your body works it becomes much easier to develop an efficient and effective exercise training program. By identifying and targeting the right fitness qualities you'll cut down on your wasted time in the gym and increase your training results.

Elderberry - Uses and Side Effects

Elder flowers and berries have been used in traditional medicine and as flavorings for centuries. In folk medicine, the flowers have been used for their diuretic and laxative properties and as an astringent. Various parts of the elder have been used to treat cancer and a host of other unrelated disorders. Elderberry is available as an aqueous solution, berries, extract, flowers, oil, and wine.

Reported uses

Elderberry extracts are used to treat asthma, bronchitis, cough, epilepsy, fever, fungal infections, gout, headache, hepatic dysfunction, neuralgia, rheumatic diseases, and toothache. They are also used as diuretics, insect repellents, and laxatives.

Native Americans used tea made from elderberry flowers to treat respiratory infections. They also used the leaves and flowers in poultices applied to wounds, and the bark, suitably aged, as a laxative. The berries are frequently made into beverages, pies, and preserves, but they have also been used to treat arthritis.

Administration

Infusion (add 3 to 4 g of elderberry flowers to 5 oz of simmering water): 1 to 2 cups by mouth several times daily

Elderberry juice-containing syrup: Adults, 4 tablespoons daily for three days; children, 2 tablespoons daily for three days.

Hazards

Adverse reactions associated with elderberry include diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. There are no known interactions with elderberry.

Pregnant and breast-feeding patients should avoid use.

Safety Risk Elderberry has been associated with cyanide-like poisoning. Patients should avoid consumption of berries from the dwarf elder (S.ebulus) because it can contain an especially high content of cyanide-like compounds.

Clinical considerations

Don't confuse elderberry with American elder (Sambucus canadensis).

Leaves and stems shouldn't be crushed when making elderberry juice because of potential for cyanide toxicity.

Elderberry may interfere with the intended therapeutic effect of conventional drugs.

Elderberry (especially S. ebulus) can cause cyanide-like poisoning characterized by diarrhea, vomiting, vertigo, numbness, and stupor-particularly if uncooked portions are consumed. It can also cause toxic reaction in children if they use elderberry stems for peashooters.

Uncooked elderberries are more likely to cause nausea.

Monitor patients for nausea and vomiting.

Warn patient not to treat symptoms of asthma, infection, or hepatic disease with elderberry before seeking appropriate medical evaluation because doing so may delay diagnosis of a potentially serious medical condition.

Inform patient of the toxic potential of certain varieties of elderberry.

Advise patient to keep this and other herbal products out of children's reach.

Tell patient to remind pharmacist of any herbal or dietary supplement that he's taking when obtaining a new prescription.

Advise patient to consult his health care provider before using an herbal preparation because a treatment with proven efficacy may be available.

Research summary

The concepts behind the use of elderberry and the claims made regarding its effects haven't yet been validated scientifically.

Benefits of Vitamin B5, Sources and Deficiency

Vitamin B5 is also known as pantothenic acid. Its name is derived from the Greek word pantos meaning "from everywhere," as small quantities of pantothenic acid are found in nearly every food.

In its functional form, vitamin B5 gets combined with another small, sulfur-containing molecule to form coenzyme A (or CoA). This conversion allows vitamin B5 to participate in a wide variety of chemical and organic reactions. Coenzyme A is needed to carry out various metabolic functions, and for the generation of energy in the form of ATP from fats, carbohydrates and proteins.

Roger J. Williams, the discoverer of pantothenic acid suggested that Vitamin B5 might be helpful in the management of certain medical disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Functions of Vitamin B5 -

* Vitamin B5 is also known as the anti-stress vitamin at times. It is one of the eight water soluble B complex vitamins.

* Vitamin B5 helps production of the cellular antioxidant glutathione, and is therefore an essential vitamin for all life forms.

* Helps in the break down carbohydrates, proteins and fats for energy - thus a stamina enhancer.

* This vitamin plays an important role in production of adrenal hormones in the adrenal glands.

* Vitamin B5 helps to produce neurotransmitters, cholesterol required for proper nerve and muscle performance.

* It is also responsible for haemoglobin production and metabolism of toxins by the liver.

* It plays an important role in cell division, DNA reproduction and RNA transcription.

* It regulates the formation of stress hormones and hair pigmentation.

Deficiency of Vitamin B5 -

It is an unlikely that an adult will have a deficiency of vitamin B5 because of the availability of B5 in many foods, plus the fact that it is also produced by our intestinal bacteria.
However, a deficiency of Vitamin B5 causes fatigue, muscle weakness, personality changes, psoriasis, and headache. Vitamin B5 is often used to treat the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, edema, swelling, pain, and stiffness in joints.

Pantothenic acid is also recommended to prevent stress and relieve insomnia, arthritis, food intolerance and teeth grinding.

Oral application of pantothenic acid helps relieve many skin problems and cure wounds.

Who are at risk of Vitamin B5 deficiency?

* Women who are on birth control pills are recommended to take extra doses of Vitamin B5.

* Smokers and alcoholics also fall under this category.

* People undergoing stress, prone to allergies or eating too many refined foods might develop a shortage of this vitamin.

Symptoms of Vitamin B5 deficiency -

· painful & burning feet

· skin abnormalities

· numbness and poor coordination

· abdominal and muscle cramps

· vomiting

· anaemia

· insomnia and depression

· stunted growth

· restlessness

Most of these symptoms and signs get resolved with external administration of pantothenic acid.
Vitamins B12, folic acid and biotin are required for proper use of vitamin B5 in the body's biochemical activities. In addition, vitamin C somewhat helps prevent B5 deficiency.

Dosage of Vitamin B5 -

Since deficiency of pantothenic acid is rare, so there is no recommended daily intake for this vitamin. Pantothenic acid is mostly included in B-complex multivitamins. The RDA for men is 10 mg and women is 8 mg.

Normal daily intake of pantothenic acid for adults is 4 to 7 milligrams. Vitamin B5 should be taken with water, preferably after eating.

Pantothenic acid does not usually cause any side effects, but pregnant and lactating mothers should be careful to consume only the normal daily intake.

Vitamin B5 can be found in multivitamins, B complex vitamins, or sold individually under the name of pantothenic acid and calcium pantothenate. It is available in a variety of forms including tablets and capsules, and must be taken under medical supervision.

Dietary sources of Vitamin B5 -

The term pantothenic acid is derived from the Greek word pantos, meaning everywhere. Vitamin B5 is widely distributed in plant and animal food sources, where it occurs in both bound and free forms.
Pantothenic acid is richly found in peanuts, liver, kidney, cauliflower, mushrooms, seeds and other nuts, pumpkin, mushrooms, legumes, sweet potato, milk, soya, cheese, egg yolk, fish, chicken, wholegrain bread and cereals, and bananas. The richest sources of the vitamin are the ovaries of cod and tuna fish.
Breakfast cereals are also a good source if they have been fortified with pantothenic acid.
Do not add soda to the water used for cooking vegetables - it will destroy the pantothenic acid.

Vitamin B5 storage -

Vitamin B5 is relatively unstable in food, and significant amounts of this vitamin can be lost through cooking, freezing, and commercial processing.
Vitamins are easily destroyed and washed out during food preparation and storage. Store vitamin supplements at room temperature, in a dry place that is free of moisture.

Should I Invest in Human Growth Hormones?

If you are an avid sports fan, you might have already heard about this hormone. Many sports' organizations in different parts of the globe have banned players who consume this hormone. The hormone has its share of advantages and disadvantages. For the sake of this brief discussion, we will concentrate only on the advantages. What is human growth hormone? It is nothing but a hormone that accelerates the repair of body cells and tissues by facilitating accelerated cell regeneration. Promoting the growth of body cells and tissues is just the primary function of the hormones; you will realize that the same hormone can induce many other side effects on the body.

Firstly, regular consumption of human growth hormones will facilitate in the strengthening of the bones. It does so by retaining the concentration of calcium within the body. Excess calcium depletion will lead to osteoporosis. In fact, many of the athletes consume this hormone solely due to this advantage. Recent research has revealed that the same hormone can lead to increased muscle mass. If you are a body builder, and if you would like to sculpt your physique, you must be investing on these hormones.

Thirdly, the human growth hormone aids in rapid metabolism and breaking down on nutrients (from the ingested food materials). This property of the hormone is very advantageous to humans as metabolism and weight loss are often interrelated. Most of the weight loss supplements are designed to augment the metabolism rates within the body. The same hormone is also known to aid in the synthesis of proteins. The body must be nurtured with ample sources of proteins - the food, which we consume, contain ample quantities of proteins. In addition to that, the body also synthesizes additional proteins. HGH will aid in streamlining these processes.

Cell growth and repair are an interesting aspect. The repairing and replacing of the body cells is occurring continuously. The human growth hormone aids in acceleration the pace of cell growth and repair. The brain is the only organ that is ironically untouched by the same hormone. The hormone is also noted to be highly effective for controlling the temperature of the body. An ambient temperature is necessary so that the bodily functions are rationalized. The temperature of the body affects the functioning of the stomach, the liver, the brain and can even alter your sleeping habits.

Human growth hormone is often touted as a super hormone that can take care of various bodily aspects. The hormone is in high demand in the commercial circles. Keeping in tune with the laws of economy, manufacturers tend to keep the pricing of the hormone a bit higher. If you are interested in purchasing the hormone, you must sift through the offers outlined in various websites (that distribute these types of hormones). You must be aware of the fact that the sale of this particular growth hormone is considered as an illegal activity in some parts of the country.

Benefits of PABA Para-Amino Benzoic-Acid

PABA is classified as a micronutrient and an antioxidant. The nutrient basically mops up free radicals otherwise known as "loose electrons" that cause cellular damage that is mentioned in the theories of aging. PABA helps the body form erythrocytes (red blood cells). Red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body.

PABA also helps to improve the body's use of protein, and helps to make folic acid. The nutrient breaks down protein and maintains intestinal flora. The nutrient is best used with vitamin C and the group B vitamins, as well as folic acid.

PABA can be found in such foods as liver, molasses, whole grains, mushrooms and spinach. It is also sometimes made by intestinal bacteria. A diet that includes these things will normally prevent a deficiency.

Benefits of PABA

There are some benefits to taking PABA. The nutrient may reduce fatigue and limit the effects of depression. It may also help in the reduction of the inflammatory effects of Osteoarthritis. PABA could reduce the onset of wrinkles as we age and smooth out the skin. The nutrient may restore the original hair color to some who have gone gray. It is possible that supplementation with PABA may actually correct a deficiency. It also helps with hair growth and improves the pigmentation (color or lack of color) in the skin.

PABA Deficiency

There is a possibility one could experience a deficiency in PABA. Some signs of a deficiency maybe depression, fatigue, irritability, nervousness, and constipation. It could also be indicated by weeping eczema and/or patchy skin.

Research is a bit contradictory at the moment because some reports state that PABA has no known toxicity problems, where as others report some issues. Sunscreens that have a SPF over 8 may reduce the body's ability to make Vitamin D. Signs of toxicity include skin rashes, nausea, and vomiting. Excessive levels could lead to liver damage.

Many people take paba as part of their nutritional plan, however, we suggest that you take paba as a more comprehensive formula rather than as a stand alone supplement product.

Just because a nutrient is supposed to be good for you, it does not mean it will have an therapeutic benefits if taking alone. Many nutrients need other nutrients to work to their true potential.

Cranberry Supplements - Powerful Allies to Battle Urinary Tract Infections

Have you ever wondered what exactly taking cranberry supplements can do for your health and if you should take them? You may have heard of different reasons for taking them, but were not sure if they were right for you. One of the most common uses of cranberry supplements is for the treatment of urinary tract infections. Cranberry juice has long been an effective and natural way to treat urinary tract infections, and cranberry supplements can work just as well.

Cranberry has other names that you may not be aware of that include American cranberry, Arandano, Mossberry and Vaccinium species. Cranberries prevent the bacteria that we come in contact with from sticking to the cells of the lining of the bladder. Some experts believe that cranberry and cranberry supplements can prevent kidney stones from developing and also removing the toxins from the blood.

There is not a specified amount of cranberry supplements that is advised to take, and since it is all natural you really can't overdo it on this supplement. You should try to include at least 800 mg of cranberry juice concentrate or extract in your diet every day. If you are not a big fan of the taste of cranberry juice or do not see yourself being able to drink that much every day, cranberry supplements can be a very easy way to get the recommended amount of cranberry in your diet.

When a cranberry is in its early stages, it starts to naturally produce molecules that are called flavonoids. These are thought to carry a lot of beneficial antibacterial abilities. The cranberry then produces a molecule of sugar that is essential for the health of the urinary tract. The flavonoids that are contained in cranberries are capable of killing off bacteria that can cause urinary tract infections.

In addition, cranberry supplements may also be able to protect us against heart disease and some kinds of cancer. Cranberry supplements are available in capsule form which makes them very easy to consume. The capsules are made from the dried and ground up berries but do not have the fiber so your body is able to absorb the nutrients better. Cranberry supplements also do not have a high sugar concentrate like some forms of cranberry juice may have, so you do not have to worry about taking in a lot of calories to get the potent benefits of cranberries.

If you do prefer to drink cranberry juice, make sure that you do not get the cocktail versions that contain very little cranberry juice and a lot of sugar. Instead, try to find the cranberry juice from concentrate that has all of the cranberry content that you are looking for with a lower amount of sugar.

Cranberry supplements are most definitely a good one to include in your diet. They can help you to either improve your health or to keep you healthy and infection free.

Vitamin Supplements and Women's Health

If you are not eating a healthy diet, the first thing you need to do is make necessary improvements for your nutritional needs. Women can also benefit from taking a good multivitamin with iron. Many women of reproductive age are slightly anemic, meaning they have a lower red blood count than they should because of their menstrual cycle every month. This can cause a loss of iron every month.

Women can have a higher blood count when they replace loss of iron by taking a multivitamin supplement with iron. Another benefit from taking such a supplement it can also cause them to have less tiredness and more energy.

Women who have tender breast can find a vitamin E supplement helpful. Women have found taking up to 1,000 IU (international units) per day have relief with this problem. But taking this much of the vitamin some women have found side effects such as becoming irritable, bloated, or having oily skin. Women who have reduced their intake to 400 IU find they still find relief from breast discomfort without the side effects.

Women who suffer from premenstrual syndrome have found vitamin B6 beneficial.

Women over the age of thirty five need to take extra calcium every day. Women from the age of thirty five until menopause need 1,000 mg of calcium every day. 1,500 mg per day is needed after menopause. Women who take estrogen after menopause only need 1,000 mg per day because of the effects of estrogen on their bodies they will not require the extra calcium.

The Journal of the American Medical Association revealed that taking prenatal vitamins for six weeks or longer before getting pregnant offered some protection against neural tube defects in the baby. The key element seems to be folic acid.

Most obstetricians agree it is good for women who are planning to become or are pregnant to take prenatal vitamins. They find women benefit from the additional calcium, folic acid and extra iron during pregnancy. Over the counter prenatal vitamin supplements work fine.

Excessive amounts of vitamins should not be taken. Excessive doses of vitamins A, D, E, and K should be especially avoided. This can be harmful. Disease may result if the vitamins are absorbed in the body's fat and accumulated in large amounts.

Women who will benefit from taking vitamin supplements particularly are people with specific diseases that make vitamin intake necessary, the elderly and often premature infants. Also, those who are inclined to avoid healthy eating habits!

Steroids - Medical and Non-Medical Uses Explained

Since the synthesis of the hormone testosterone in the 1930s, steroids have been put into use by physicians for a great many purposes and have achieved varying degrees of success in each of these cases.

Stimulation of the Bone Marrow

For many decades steroids were the answer to hypoplasmic anemia and more so the aplastic type of anemia therapy which was as a result of leukemia or even kidney failure. These steroids have been replaced largely by other hormones, synthetic proteins that selectively stimulate the growth blood cells.

Stimulation of growth

Anabolic steroids are used in children to treat growth failure. The availability of a synthetic hormone for growth which has literally very few side effects has made sure this is a secondary resort.

Appetite Stimulation and Puberty Induction

Steroids also stimulate appetite as well as the preservation and the increase in muscular mass. Steroids have also become the haven for those who have been chronically wasted by conditions such as AIDS or Cancer. Steroids have been given to dozens of boys who are distressed about the acute delay of their puberty. Basically, testosterone has become almost the only androgen that is literally used for this use and has been known to increase the weight, height as well in boys who have a delayed puberty.

Male Contraceptives

The steroid Testosterone Enanthate is mostly used as a contraceptive for males and it is a belief that in future it will be a more safe, reversible and reliable male contraceptive. Also steroids have been known to increase lean body masses and also lead to prevent weak bones in elderly men. For men with below-normal levels of testosterone, steroids have of late been effective as hormonal replacements and are also equally effective in the improvement of libido for old males.

In addition, the notion that one was born in the wrong gender is quite common in every society. Steroids have been producing such good results, for instance they produce secondary characteristics of the male gender such as facial hair, deeper voice, bone and muscular mass.

The widening bracket of users

In the United States alone, steroid users now tend to be mostly heterosexual males with an average age of twenty-five. This category of users now makes a big percentage of the noncompetitive bodybuilders as well as the non-athletic fraternity. The new category of users has resorted to using steroids for cosmetic purposes. Steroids have been used by males and females in many professional sports from bodybuilding, ball games, and martial arts to tennis, basically to attain a competitive advantage as well as assisting in fast recovery from an injury, as much as it has been prohibited by rules of all sports governing bodies.

Male students in high schools and universities have been known to use more steroids, more frequently than female high school and college students. This is again reflected in the number of those who participate in different sports while making use of steroids.

Amazing Facts About Omega 3-6-9 Fats

Omega 3 6 9 fats is short for omega 3, omega 6 and omega 9 fatty acids which are required for ensuring proper health and well-being. These fats have different roles to play in promoting overall health and preventing certain diseases including cancer and Alzheimer's.

There are some food sources of all these. However, because of today's fast-paced life people usually prefer dietary supplements as they are easier to consume and provide adequate amounts of nutrients in one serving. Omega 3 6 9 supplements are also available out there and they are very effective.

Out of these omega 3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA are gaining widespread popularity these days because of their benefits in the context of losing weight, reducing bad cholesterol levels and preventing heart disease.

Fish oil is the richest and most beneficial source of omega 3. It's difficult to consume the oil in its raw form because of the bad taste and chances of having high levels of mercury and other contaminants in it. Fish oil capsules can be consumed as an alternative as they are effective and totally safe to be consumed by people of all ages.

They have to be balanced in the body. It is recommended to keep a balance of three parts of omega 6 to one part of omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 6 is known to raise blood pressure and complement the functions of omega 3 as well as omega 9.

People with depression, inflammatory diseases, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart problems and some other conditions related to mental health should consume fish products on a regular basis. Fish oil is good for the prevention of breast and prostate cancer, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and cardiovascular disease.

The oil is also especially recommended to elderly people who are at a high risk of developing degenerative diseases and inflammatory conditions like arthritis and cystitis. Liquid omega 3 products are also available on the market which are easier to consume and equally effective.

Children should be given fish oil capsules or liquid supplements daily. They need omega 3 fats to develop a healthy brain and a strong immune system to fight against many diseases. Children who are hyperactive are DHA deficient. They should be given regular doses of omega 3 and omega 6 fats in a balanced ratio.

What Are the Ginkgo Biloba Side Effects?

People are recommended to ask for medical advice before proceeding to a treatment based on ginkgo biloba. This measure should be taken in order to prevent the appearance of the ginkgo biloba side effects. First of all, it is important to know that the ginkgo biloba side effects are not present in all the people who follow such a treatment. Instead, these appear only in certain situation.

Some of the most frequent ginkgo biloba side effects are represented by headaches, bad temper, anxiety, diarrhea and nausea. In rare cases, people develop an allergy to ginkgo biloba. No matter the situation, when the ginkgo biloba side effects become visible, it is imperative to consult a doctor.

People who have blood circulation problems must not use ginkgo biloba. This herb is known to alter the platelets. By changing the blood cellular structures that help in the coagulation of the blood, ginkgo biloba decreases the clotting speed. Aspirin and warfarin are some of the most common anti-coagulants.

These substances must never be taken when following a treatment based on this herb, because the ginkgo biloba side effects will appear in most of the cases. When both anti-coagulants and ginkgo biloba are used, the risk to have a hemorrhage is higher. Furthermore, the bleeding will last longer, as the platelets are not able to help the blood clot properly.

In more sensible patients, ginkgo biloba side effects such as gastrointestinal discomfort may be noticed. Also, pregnant women are recommended to follow a different treatment, as ginkgo biloba may lead to undesired complications.

Ginkgo biloba is widely used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, as well as in the treatment of many other memory problems. The memory loss is provoked in most of the cases by depression. In this particular case, it is better to treat the depression by not using monoamine oxidase inhibitors. Such medication interacts with ginkgo biloba and leads to the appearance of the ginkgo biloba side effects.

Spontaneous hyphema is also one of the ginkgo biloba side effects. This represents a hemorrhage in the anterior chamber of the eye. However, this side effect occurs seldom.

The first step that must be taken when experiencing ginkgo biloba side effects is to lower the dosage. Some people are not able to tolerate ginkgo biloba and because of this fact, the ginkgo biloba side effects may persist. After a while, if the ginkgo biloba side effects can still be observed, people are recommended to quit that treatment and use something else for their particular health problem.

Explosively Train the ATP Energy System

Because my focus is on baseball players, both pitchers and hitters, the ATP energy system is the one of greatest interest and importance. However, if you are involved in any sport which requires explosive movements then this should be the system of greatest interest to you as well. As I said before, it is possible to specifically train the ATP system by engaging in short, high intensity repetitive bouts with proper rest intervals. Remember the ATP system provides energy during the first 12-15 seconds of activity and has the highest potential for power output. Using this knowledge, lets look at how it is possible to incorporate different areas of training with the goal of improving the ATP energy system (and as a result your explosiveness as an athlete)

Agilities:

For years coaches in many sports have had their players do flat rung ladders, 6 inch and 12 inch agility hurdles, and/or agility rings to warm up and prepare for practice or games. Most coaches know this is a great way to get their players lathered up and can improve footwork and quickness. But in many instances players are going through the ladders or jumping over the hurdles at a low intensity for up to a minute at a time. This is what has to change. Instead, athletes need to attack agilities for short durations. The duration ideally needs to be 12 seconds or less so that they are relying on the ATP energy system. The best way to do this is to measure their agilities by time and distance. This can be accomplished by having your athletes mark which rung on the ladder they made it to or how many hurdles they were able to make it over during the set time. Then repeat this same agility after the athlete fully recovers (breathing returns to normal) and have them try to get past the point they reached the first time through. It really doesn't matter if the time is 5, 8, or 12 seconds because the right energy system is still being trained. Ideally you will mix up the times involved with some days being very short (such as 3 seconds) with other days being longer up to 12-15 seconds.

Strength Training:

I think one of the biggest misconceptions in all of sports has to be weight room training. So many weight programs, including the majority of MLB organizations are promoting the conventional lifts which have been around for decades such as bench press and squats. Do you realize that when you load up the weight on these lifts you are actually training your body to move more slowly? Elite track and field coaches are understanding this and are trying to change how they train. They are actually looking for strength exercises where they can still be explosive and train the fast twitch ATP system while getting stronger. Many have found the Speed Chains to be exactly what they wanted. This is not to say weight room training cannot be tweaked to become very beneficial. Check out Pittsburgh Steelers' Safety Troy Polamalu and the explosive, dynamic way he trains in the weight room (do a quick search online). He is one of the hardest hitters in the NFL and yet you do not see him lifting any heavy weights in slow, controlled movements. He is training his body to be amazingly quick yet still powerful. You can tremendously improve your weight room workouts if you lighten the weight your athlete is lifting and instead of establishing the number of reps to complete in a set see how many reps they can get in a certain time (keeping the time under 15 seconds and within the ATP system of course). You would be surprised how hard of a workout this will be for athletes even when the lifts are only pushups, pull-ups, body weight squats, box jumps, reverse body rows etc.

Running/Conditioning:

It seems like when people talk about conditioning/running its always about a set distance whether it's a 100 yard sprint or a 60 or 40 yard dash. What if you changed that and made it all about time? See how far you or your athlete can run in 5 or 10 seconds. Mark that distance with a cone or some object for the athlete to see and once they recover have them try and make it past that point in the same time frame. This will keep athletes training at higher intensities and won't allow them to slack off, or at least it will be obvious if they do. They will have to constantly battle against themselves and will always have a goal (set distance) to strive for. Long distance running in baseball or any other high intensity, explosive sport really has no place. When was the last time you saw an athlete jog in baseball (besides rounding the bases after a homerun), or football, or track? Running for 6 minutes, or 10 minutes, or a half an hour is training the wrong system (the oxidative system) and really has no carry over to high performance in many sports. Not to mention it is far more demanding to do high intensity sprint and agility work than to pound out a mile or two.

Although I only touched on agilities, strength training, and conditioning you can modify any work you do on or off the field to better train your athletes. The key is to keep the duration of the exercise less than 15 seconds and to try and allow the athlete enough time to catch their breath or at least give them as much time as they would have in a game to recover. By training this way it is possible to increase athleticism and explosiveness by expanding the capacity of the ATP energy system and by training the system to recover more quickly. This will really pay dividends in performance if you take the time to implement the small changes necessary to train the right way.

In order to be an explosive, dynamic athlete you must train to be one. I know that may seem obvious and far from genius but think about how you or your athletes train. Do you ever just go through the motion? Just get your "reps" in? Have you ever said before a sprint, "Just stride it out." By doing things 75% of full speed you aren't increasing your athleticism, explosiveness, or speed in any way and therefore aren't making the gains which can really set you apart from the rest.

I'll leave you with something my pitching coach Ron Wolforth often says, "If you do what everybody else does you are going to get what everybody else gets." So change those workouts from run of the mill ordinary to something with purpose which will set you apart from the pack.

4 Powerful Ways to Maximize the Energy-Boosting Benefits of D-Ribose

[An exclusive interview with George Foss, former general manager of Kayser Nutrition, southern California's health food store chain to the wealthy and famous for 52 years. George has been called a "walking repository of nutritional supplement research knowledge," and is a long-time consultant to the nutritional supplement industry. Featured on a variety of television and radio news broadcasts over the past 20 years, he is widely considered by west coast news media outlets to be the nutritional supplement industry's "go to" guy on natural health topics.]

Steve Barwick: George, I understand that today you are going to reveal four simple yet very powerful ways to dramatically maximize the energy-boosting benefits of D-Ribose. We'll get to that in just a minute. But first, could you help us understand how D-Ribose helps people regain youthful energy levels - particularly people who suffer from either age-related energy deficit disorders or disease-induced energy deficit disorders?

George Foss: Well, first of all, people with disease-induced energy deficit disorders -- such as chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, Lyme disease, MS, lupus, AIDS and many others -- are actually being robbed of their vital energy by the disease process itself. In the case of chronic fatigue, it is believed that the Epstein Barr virus or some other pathogen such as mycoplasmas actually infiltrate and attack the body's cells. These pathogens severely damage the ability of the cellular mitochondria to produce sufficient amounts of ATP. Of course, ATP is the body's chief energy molecule. Since literally hundreds of millions of cells can be damaged or compromised by an underlying infectious illness, the remaining undamaged cells are left with the task of trying to produce enough ATP to fuel the entire body. It's like an eight cylinder car running on only five or six cylinders. The body simply becomes weaker and weaker over time, because the damaged cells are functioning at excessively low levels, and the undamaged cells are being taxed to their limits. The disease process spreads, because the cells cannot produce enough energy to empower the body to fight it off.

Fortunately, by supplying the body with supplemental D-Ribose -- basically flooding the cells with the nutritional fuel they need to produce dramatic levels of extra energy in the form of ATP -- you can frequently "jump start" the body back into high gear. The immune system gets the energy it needs to begin functioning at peak levels again. The brain gets the energy it needs to direct the healing process. Neurons fire better, not just in the brain but throughout the entire nervous system, sending healing chemical and electronic messages throughout the body with lightning speed. Synaptic transmission is restored to peak function. There is even some evidence that the cells damaged by the pathogens begin to recover when given the fuel they need for self-repair. And finally, energy levels are fully restored, and the body is able to pull itself out of the downward spiral caused by the underlying disease process.

Steve Barwick: What about energy deficit disorders related to aging?

George Foss: Well, aging is of course a normal process. And there is not much we can do about it but take care of our bodies by avoiding toxins and by making sure we get the proper nutrition, hydration and daily exercise our bodies need. Yet even if we are very good at doing these things, we will inevitably suffer from lower energy levels as we age. In large part, this is because, as we get older, our digestion does not function as well. And without proper digestion, our body is not able to extract the same levels of D-Ribose from food it once could. So there is less D-Ribose to send to the mitochondria for conversion into ATP. Because of this, we slowly begin to lose energy as we age. When D-Ribose is not extracted from the foods we eat and delivered to the cells in sufficient enough quantities to sustain normal everyday bodily functions, we simply begin to slow down. And quite commonly, fatigue and malaise sets in. But by supplementing with even small amounts of D-Ribose, we can make up for much of that lost energy caused by the normal aging process. The bottom line is that if we can give the cells what they need - in this case, supplemental D-Ribose -- we can maintain a much higher level of daily energy than we could if we did not supplement. This is why so many middle-aged and older folks now supplement each morning with D-Ribose.

Steve Barwick: Well, at 52 years old, I know I use it. And frankly, I wouldn't go a day without it. So what are some of the best ways to take D-Ribose for its well-known energy-boosting benefits?

George Foss: Based upon my experiences with customers over the past ten years, I'd say most healthy people who want to take D-Ribose for a little bit of extra energy generally need to take only one or two capsules a day by mouth -- usually with a little bit of food. Each capsule should be a minimum of 700 mg. That way, if you take two capsules per day, you are getting nearly a gram and a half of D-Ribose, which is a nice dose for a relatively healthy person. However, if you are suffering from any kind of energy deficit disorder, you may need to either take significantly more D-Ribose, or take it a bit differently in order to maximize its energy-boosting benefits.

Steve Barwick: You're saying there are different ways to take D-Ribose, so as to get more oomph out of it?

George Foss: Yes, absolutely. Here are four powerful ways to maximize your D-Ribose energy-boosting benefits, without having to increase your dosage:

1.) Take it sublingually. This means you should simply pour it out of the capsule directly under your tongue, and then swish it around inside your mouth so that it coats your cheeks and gums. Do this for several minutes. This allows the body to absorb much of the D-Ribose directly into the bloodstream through the rich network of veins found under the tongue, and in the cheeks and gums, thereby bypassing the normal digestive process in which some D-Ribose is inevitably lost. D-Ribose is a carbohydrate, a complex form of sugar, so it tastes slightly sweet, and for most people is not distasteful at all. This little trick alone will help dramatically maximize the effectiveness of D-Ribose when you take it.

2.) Another way to maximize your D-Ribose energy-boosting benefits is to take it with a commercial liquid hydration formula, such as Gatorade. Because Gatorade is specifically designed to hydrate the body's 7 trillion cells, mixing several 700 mg. capsules worth of D-Ribose into a glassful before drinking it will help draw the D-Ribose directly into the cells very quickly, resulting in a dramatic physical energy boost that simply cannot be achieved by taking D-Ribose with water or other liquids alone. However, insulin dependent diabetics and hypoglycemics should only use this method under a doctor's guidance and supervision, and blood sugar should be monitored closely, due to the sugars in the Gatorade.

3.) You can also dramatically maximize your D-Ribose energy-boosting benefits by taking it with synergistic nutrients. D-Ribose tends to significantly increase the body's ability to absorb and effectively utilize other nutrients. By taking it with B-vitamins, such as a good "B-50" formula, which is to say, 50 mg. of each of the major B-vitamins, you will maximize the beneficial effects of the vitamins by up to 100%. And the vitamins will dramatically extend the beneficial effects of the D-Ribose throughout the day. Other synergistic nutrients that can be taken with D-Ribose for phenomenal energy-boosting benefits are magnesium (200 mg.), malic acid (900 mg.), iodine (200 mcg.), selenium (200 mcg), tyrosine (500 mg.) and vitamin C (500 mg.), to mention but a few. One of my favorite combinations is 700 mg. of D-Ribose taken with 1,000 mg. of chewable B-12 in the methylcobalamin form.

4.) Finally, a very powerful way to maximize your D-Ribose energy-boosting benefits is to take it from time to time with an immune system booster such as Beta-glucan. This is a little-known secret I learned from several people with severe chronic fatigue, who used it to very good effect whenever they needed to quickly recover from a debilitating chronic fatigue "crash." Taken together, the synergy between D-Ribose and Beta-glucan appears to double or even triple the individual benefits of each supplement. Energy and clear thinking can often be restored within a couple of hours, even when the mental "fog" so common to chronic fatigue is severe. What's more, immunity can be restored to higher pre-crash levels very quickly. And when taken for several days in a row, the uplifting mental and physical effects of this dynamic duo can last for several days to several weeks afterwards. Some regular D-Ribose users have told me that they simply take a "booster" using this combination of nutrients once a week, in order to prevent any further chronic fatigue "crashes.' By the way, the best form of Beta-glucan to use for this technique is the fully micronized Beta-1,3-1,6-glucan, available exclusively from a company in Liberty, Texas called Nutritional Supply Corporation. They can be reached at 1-888-246-7224, extension 222. D-Ribose can, of course, be purchased from our good friends at The Silver Edge by calling 1-800-528-0559, or by visiting them online at http://www.thesilveredge.com

Steve Barwick: George, it has been a real pleasure talking with you today. And it is always an eye-opening experience. We certainly appreciate your very interesting insights. Thank you for taking the time to visit with us.

George Foss: Thank you, Steve. It's been my pleasure. For more in-depth information on D-Ribose, see the "Unique Nutritional Supplements" link at http://www.thesilveredge.com.

The Difference Between Aerobic and Anaerobic Exercises

Many people mistakenly believe that all vigorous forms of exercise are aerobic in nature. However, some forms of vigorous exercise are actually anaerobic, and have a very different effect on the body. If you're just getting started on an exercise regimen, this information will help you sort out the difference between the two and tailor your workouts accordingly.

So exactly what is the definition of aerobic exercise? Aerobic means "with oxygen," where anaerobic is "without oxygen." No, that doesn't entail holding your breath while exercising! Rather, it refers to cellular tissues producing energy without having to rely on oxygen availability. Alternatively, you may have guessed that aerobic exercise requires large supplies of oxygen to generate energy. The fundamental difference between aerobic and anaerobic exercises is that simple.

A more detailed definition is that during aerobic exercise, activity is so sustained that it requires large amounts of oxygen. The muscles utilize oxygen to burn fat and glucose to manufacture adenosine triphosphate (ATP) - the basic energy vehicle for all cells in the body. During the initial stages of aerobic exercise, glycogen is transformed into glucose. If glucose stores become depleted, fat is metabolized as fuel. It's interesting to note that "runner's high" occurs when muscles have exhausted their immediate glycogen stores and begin relying only on oxygen, which releases endorphins in the brain.

During anaerobic exercise, the muscles being used rely on energy-producing processes that don't require large amounts of oxygen. Instead, the body metabolizes muscle glycogen to produce power. Glycogen is supplied by blood sugar, which is manufactured by the liver from dietary amino acids and carbohydrates--whole grain, of course! Anaerobic exercise is so fast and brief that it doesn't have time to rely on oxygen, so glycogen is used.

Some people mistakenly believe that aerobic exercise makes you small and weak. However, it actually tones muscle throughout your body and burns fat. This will make you look good in your bathing suit--not to mention your birthday suit! The effects that aerobic activity has on your body are not merely cosmetic - there are numerous health bonuses, such as:

· Improved circulation and lower blood pressure

· Increased lung capacity through stronger respiratory muscles

· A stronger heart, which boosts pumping efficiency and lowers the resting heart rate

· Increased red blood cell count, which transports oxygen more efficiently throughout the entire body

· Reduced risk of cardiovascular disease

The effects that anaerobic exercise has on your body involves being able to deliver powerful performance on demand. That comes in handy when sprinting to the finish line, or making a break to score after stealing the ball. Muscles that are anaerobically trained develop differently, which boosts their performance in brief, high-intensity situations. Benefits include:

· Stronger bones

· Reduced muscle atrophy with age

· Increased speed and power

· Increased muscle strength and mass

It's important to understand the different types of exercises that produce an aerobic vs. anaerobic effect. Anaerobic benefits are produced by brief, high-intensity activities, while in the aerobic zone, effort is moderate with a steady heart rate.

Specific types of anaerobic exercise include tennis, weight lifting, sprinting and jumping. If you'd prefer not to frequent a gym, weight lifting can be performed in the comfort of your own home. A few dumb-bells, a weight bench and medicine ball are all you need.

Some good aerobic exercises are walking, running, swimming, cycling, cross-country skiing and rowing. Fortunately, you can do aerobic exercises at home: riding an exercise bike, walking on a treadmill, or following an exercise video - the choices are virtually endless. This is particularly helpful if it's rainy or drastically cold outdoors. Also, depending on where you live, going snow-shoeing, hiking or kayaking is possible without ever having to step foot in the car!

Combining aerobic and anaerobic exercise is essential to maintaining overall balanced fitness. While most associate getting into shape with aerobic activities, anaerobic exercise is a beneficial complement to aerobic exercise. For example, weight lifting is a great way to add even more tone and definition beyond what aerobic training provides.

Be sure to check with your physician before beginning any exercise regimen. Also, it's very important to begin any exercise program slowly. Many people overdo it and lose motivation or worse yet, sustain injury. You may experience a little soreness the day after working out in the beginning; but if you are so sore that you can only work out one or two times per week it is counter-productive. Make exercise a healthy habit by doing a little every day; you can increase the intensity as you build endurance and strength over time.

Of course, a daily exercise routine is just one factor in the equation for optimum health. You should also enjoy a nutritious and delicious diet, get eight hours of sleep every night, say no habits such as smoking and excessive drinking, and make sure you get the full spectrum of vitamins and minerals that your body needs to look and feel its best.

Juan Martin Del Potro - A Star of the Future

The majority of the world's top 20 are aged between 21 and 25, the age at which tennis players peak. Rafael Nadal, 22 and Novak Djokovic, 21 still have their best years ahead of them, which reduces the prospects of grand slam glory for similarly aged players such as Andy Murray, Stanislas Wawrinka and Richard Gasquet. Del Potro is not yet 20 and has time on his side in the bid to join the game's elite.

The Argentinian youngster has just won two ATP events in a week, following his maiden tour win at the the Mercedes open in Stuttgart with victory in the Austrian open in Kitzbuhel. Both wins were on clay and it is easy to assume that del Potro is another South American specialist on the red stuff.

He is indeed comfortable on clay having been brought up on the surface, but at 6ft 6 is more of a hard court specialist with a big serve. Players from Argentina only usually prosper at the French open but del Potro has the game to succeed at Wimbledon and the hard courts of the US and Australian opens. He achieved second round appearances at Melbourne and Wimbledon and is clearly progressing at a good enough rate to reach the latter stages next season.

Del Potro was a good junior, reaching the last eight of the 2005 French open, but was never marked for greatness at senior level like Nadal of Federer were. Three futures tournament wins in 2006 elevated him 900 places in the rankings and at 25th in the list he is now ready to add some big name scalps to that of Gasquet which he claimed in the Stuttgart final.

He is a step ahead of his peers in development and should have a window of opportunity to win majors in his mid-twenties when Nadal and Djokovic are past their best and Federer has retired. Coach Franco Davin will need to oversee more steady progress but back-to-back tour wins - a feat that only he and Nadal achieved this season - suggests consistency will not be a problem.

Types of Manual Wheelchairs

Determining what kind of manual wheelchair you need can be overwhelming. There are many options and styles available to choose from. So how do you determine which one is best for you? It is best to be evaluated by a rehabilitation professional so they can access your condition to help you determine the best available option for your needs. A physical therapist or occupational therapist that has passed the RESNA certification test and is an Assistive Technology Practitioner (ATP) is trained to analyze your needs to recommend the appropriate type of wheelchair.

Different Types of Manual Wheelchairs

Standard manual wheelchairs are used by those with sufficient upper extremity function that can safely self-propel the standard wheelchair. The weight for this type of wheelchair starts at 35 pounds.

Lightweight manual wheelchairs give you the most independence of movement with the least amount of effort. This type of wheelchair is recommended for someone who cannot self-propel in a standard manual wheelchair. The weight of this type wheelchair ranges from 28-34 pounds.

Ultra Lightweight wheelchair is for the highly active individual as they are more easily maneuverable and durable. This type wheelchair weighs in as low as 14 pounds. This helps with ease of use and transport.

Heavy Duty manual wheelchairs have a reinforced heavy-duty frame that accommodates weight capacities ranging anywhere from 250 to 650 pounds depending on the brand of chair.

Manual wheelchairs are prescribed to help the user with mobility related activities of daily living. To safely use a manual wheelchair requires assessment of coordination, range of motion, endurance, strength and willingness to use the manual wheelchair.

Muscles and Creatine

A natural substance found in some of the foods that we eat is called creatine. This is usually found in red meat and in the recent years, creatine has been proven to help bodybuilders in many different areas. As a good result, it is the most popular dietary supplement used by body builders and power lifters. You can discuss the health risks of taking creatine supplements with your doctor and realize that there are benefits to upping your creatine amounts as well.

1. There is a chemical that rebuilds your muscles called ATP. Creatine will help rebuild ATP.

2. Your muscles use glycogen to fuel the anabolic process, creatine increases your ability to store glycogen.

3. Creatine is widely available in your food. Creatine is usually fount in red meats, like steak, so that vegetarians or anyone who does not eat a lot of creatine filled foods may benefit from the use of these supplements.

4. Creatine increases cardiovascular activity. When you take creatine supplements, you will most likely notice the effects of drugs in your anabolic workout. It can help your cardiovascular exercise routine as well. Creatine will assist your aerobic activities allowing you to burn more fat.

However you take it, creatine is the most important substance to building muscle. The experts are still divided on many other issues such as protein verses carbohydrates, whether or not to use pseudo-ephendrine, or even how often to work out. But the one issue where there is no division is the value of creatine in your diet or as a supplement.

How to Supercharge Your Energy Levels through Exercise

Your energy levels will depend on several factors, including genetics, nutrition, sleep habits, and emotional stress. Some of these you have no control over But there is one VERY important factor that you do have control over and that is your ability to take part in physical exercise.

Need a source of vast power and energy?

Look no further than your gym.

The link between physical fitness and energy is so strong, that doctors have lately been prescribing exercise as treatment for chronic fatigue, depression, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), and insomnia, for instance.

If sufferers of the most stubborn kind of fatigue can be energized with exercise, imagine what can do for those of us who experience ordinary, every-day fatigue.

* Feel Great At Mid-Afternoon *

Your brain thrives on oxygen. Blood transports oxygen to the brain, so the greater blood flow to the brain, the greater the oxygen supply the brain has. As you increase your heartbeat with a vigorous workout, more blood surges through the brain, more oxygen gets absorbed by your brain cells, and you feel more mentally alert and energetic.

Experts point out another long-term cause-and-effect relationship between exercise and blood flow to the brain: as you continue exercising, the number of capillaries (small blood vessels between your arteries and veins) throughout your body will grow. More blood flow through your "pipes" means more oxygen will be supplied where you need it.

Regular exercise also keeps the pipes clear and circulation healthy by preventing atherosclerosis (buildup of plaque). Regular exercise can actually REVERSE atherosclerosis when combined with a healthy nutrition plan. When you have atherosclerosis in check, your brain is virtually guaranteed for the rest of your life.

Blood also carries glucose, the simple sugar that's the primary fuel source for your entire nervous system of which the brain is the command center. Glucose's production starts the metabolism of carbohydrates. Various enzymes, plus your body's ability to use glucose to produce ATP, the more important energy chemical in the body, control this production. When you exercise, you increase the level of those enzymes and their activity.

In other words, when you exercise regularly, you boost your enzymes, resulting in more glucose, and your body is more efficient in using the glucose. You get a larger supply of ATP, which helps fight off the mid-afternoon energy drop-off.

* Increase Metabolism *

It's no secret that strength trainers are firmer and stronger than sedentary folks. How could it be otherwise?

Resistance exercise builds muscle, pure and simple. The more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism, and the more calories you burn even at rest.

So why does "strong and toned" equate to more energy?

For starters, heavy people have to lug around more weight all day long. When the overweight climbs a flight of stairs, do yard work, or even just carrying the garbage can to the curb, they're also carrying that excess weight, making almost everything they do more exhausting.

Better-conditioned muscles make every task that much easier, regardless of body weight. When you exercise, your ability to use muscle fibers is increased. So you require less effort to perform any physical task.

A strong body also has a stronger immune system. Being sick drains us of energy, and exercise, by boosting immunity, staves off illness. Recent research has shed light on why the strong may get sick less often and recuperate faster when they do get sick: exercise increases the activity of natural killer cells in the bloodstream.

* Less Stress *

A great deal of research supports that weight lifting is one of the most effective means of battling depression and stress. One of the main fatiguing factors of depression and stress is lack of sleep. In a recent Stanford University study, formerly sedentary insomniacs who began to exercise fell asleep 15 minutes faster and were able to sleep an hour longer than they had before becoming active.

* Boost Brain Fitness *

To this point, we've been talking about the benefit of exercise on mental energy. But is it possible that being in shape might translate to even greater mental benefits, such as increased intelligence, creativity, memory, or reasoning ability? It's very possible.

Studies show that both factors of mental stimulation and exercise were contributing to the increase of the brain's learning centers in different ways. Mental stimulation results in more synapses (the little gaps between brain nerve cells that enable them to communicate with one another), while exercise increases the number of capillaries in the cerebellum and cerebral cortex (two areas of the brain crucial to intelligence.)

* Take a Walk *

Medical research results could hardly be clearer: Taking a walk is one of the best ways to take charge of your health. A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (February 11, 1998) showed that walking briskly for half an hour just six times a month cut the risk of premature death in men and women by 44 percent. A study in the New England Journal of Medicine (January 8, 1997) reported that men 61 to 81 years old sharply reduced their risk of death from all causes, including cancer and heart disease, by walking two miles a day. Other research has shown similar results for women.

Recent studies have concluded that moderate amounts of exercise - including walking, jogging or using a treadmill for one hour, four to five times a week - can turn back the aging clock 30 years for middle aged men.

Consistency is probably the most important part of your workout. The more committed you are to walking all or most days of the week, the healthier you'll be. Remember that short walks are better then none at all. Health, like life, is a journey. All you have to do is take the first step.
